Helping The Helpers – Exploring the Heart of Ensō Mental Health

by JoAnna Prewitt, M.S., LPC-MH, QMHP, NCC / Executive Director/Outpatient Therapist  |  December 17, 2025

Ensō Mental Health is excited to announce that its founder and Executive Director, JoAnna Prewitt, recently appeared as a guest on The Grit to Growth Podcast with host Levi Te Slaa. In this insightful episode, JoAnna shares her personal journey from a childhood fueled by a desire for better family support to building our thriving group practice in Spearfish.

You can listen to the full conversation here: The Grit to Growth Podcast.

From Lived Experience to Lasting Impact

JoAnna’s journey began early, when her parents’ divorce planted a seed for a lifelong calling to help others navigate life’s hardest moments. After years of raising children and working in social services, she returned to her dream of working one-on-one with clients.

Building Ensō wasn’t a straight path; it required navigating licensure across three states and even returning to graduate coursework 15 years after finishing her degree. She launched Ensō in 2020—just as the pandemic hit—and quickly adapted to telehealth to meet the rising need for stress management and anxiety counseling in the community.

A Sanctuary for Clients in the Black Hills

For those searching for a therapist in Spearfish, SD or the surrounding Black Hills, this episode highlights Ensō’s commitment to providing a sanctuary for healing. JoAnna discusses how the practice helps individuals, couples, kids/teens, and families move through signs of anxiety, burnout, relationship struggles, and trauma.

Ensō is dedicated to compassionate and competent care in an environment that is just as healthy for its staff as it is for its clients.  The practice celebrates the diversity of the communities that it serves, and specializes in trauma-informed care, improving communication in relationships, and striving to make sure every individual is seen, respected, and empowered.  If you’re struggling, we are here and can often get you scheduled quickly – no wait lists!

Changing the Industry for Clinicians

The podcast also serves as a call to action for professionals seeking mental health group practice employment. JoAnna speaks candidly about her mission to reach back to the next generation of therapists, moving away from the “overworked and underpaid” model that often leads to clinician burnout and fails to develop rich skills that ultimately offer the most healing for clients.

For clinicians looking for a supportive team environment and manageable caseloads, Ensō offers a unique culture where healthy therapists do more to help their clients become healthy:

  • The team culture is strong and supportive.

  • Clinicians receive a fair, steady wage from the first day of employment, with great earning potential growth and professional mentorship.

  • The practice emphasizes accountability and excellence without overwhelming schedules, actively working to prevent burnout.

We are excited to announce that we are expanding and working to open a physical location in Rapid City soon (we already offer telehealth, if you don’t want to travel to Spearfish)!  As we do so, the mission remains the same: to ignite possibilities for healing through competent and compassionate care. Whether you are a potential client ready to do the work or a clinician looking for a professional home, we invite you to listen to JoAnna’s story of resilience and vision.
